WE Energies removed a hydroelectic dam here as part of the Wilderness Shores Agreement with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

Rapids

These rapids were covered for the last 80 yrs. with over 30 ft. of water.

Flood Plain

The dam removal uncovered this upstream stretch of flood plain.

Former Dam Site

The dam created a reservoir over 40 acres in extent.

Sand & Sediment

The dam stopped the flow of water, depositing sand and sediment on the bottom of the reservoir.

Mud Flat

Patches of hardened mud, probably part of sediments covering the original channel, are found along the river bed.

Former Dam Site

The dam was removed from this narrow part of the river gorge. It was built in 1924.

Stump

A pine stump is all that remains of the original forest.

Removal of the dam was done in stages, beginning in 2003 and ending in 2005.

This is the former site of the power house, electric transformers, and power lines.

These rapids are just below the dam site.

Re-vegetation

River banks are filling in with grasses, sedges, trees and other plant life.

Restored Flow

The restored flow of the river will bring cooler water for fish & more habitat for aquatic insects.

Public Access

Under its agreement with FERC, WE is required to maintain public access to the river.

Public Access

This stretch of river is becoming a popular spot for white water kayakers.
